Brancaster Staithe to Scolt Head Walk
This walk takes you to the Scolt Head Nature Reserve on the Norfolk coast.
The walk starts from the village of Brancaster Staithe, following the Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path east along the front. The route then turns north east to follow footpaths into the reserve.
The Scolt Head tidal walk involves wading through shallow creeks and crossing expansive mudflats before reaching the island’s sandy dunes and wild landscape. This walk can only be undertaken at low tide as the tides flood the crossing route quickly, cutting the island off from the mainland.

Hut on Scolt Head Island. The island is a haven for coastal wildlife, with saltmarshes supporting sea lavender, samphire, and thrift, while the dunes are home to marram grass and rare wildflowers such as sea holly and yellow horned poppy. Large flocks of waders, including curlews, redshanks, and oystercatchers, forage along the shoreline, while little terns and ringed plovers nest on the open sands. In winter, the island attracts huge gatherings of brent geese and other migratory wildfowl. The surrounding waters are rich in marine life, with seals often seen basking on sandbanks or swimming near the creeks.
