National Cycle Route 465 - Llanhilleth - Abertillery - Brynmawr
This signed Sustrans route runs from Llanhilleth to Brynmawr via Abertillery in Blaenau Gwent. Much of the route takes place on traffic free railway paths so is also suitable for walkers.
The first four miles of Route 465 follow a gentle gradient with a tarmac surface, running from Llanhilleth Train Station to Abertillery Park. Starting in the narrow valley at Llanhilleth, the route passes rows of terraced houses before following the River Ebbw to Aberbeeg, where the river divides into the Ebbw Fawr and Ebbw Fach. The path continues through a wooded valley where jays are commonly spotted, and in June, wild strawberries can be seen growing. A notable feature along the way is The Guardian, a statue of a miner created by Sebastian Boyesen, which stands near the former site of the Six Bells Colliery in memory of the 1960 disaster that claimed 45 lives.
The next six-mile stretch from Abertillery to Brynmawr is mostly traffic-free and passes through the communities of Blaina and Nantyglo.
The route links with National Cycle Route 46 in Brynmawr. You can also pick up National Cycle Route 466 which runs from the Heads Of The Valley to Pontypool along part of the old Ebbw Valley Railway.

Cycle route 465, Aberbeeg. The cycle route is on the dismantled railway from Aberbeeg to Brynmawr. The remains of the platform at the former Aberbeeg Junction Station can be seen sweeping away from the bridge support for the road bridge. There is hope in some quarters that the railway might be restored.
