National Cycle Route 466 - Heads Of The Valley - Pontypool - Ebbw Valley Railway
This signed Sustrans trail is an on-road route linking the Heads of the Valleys area with Pontypool. Much of the route is also suitable for walkers.
It generally follows the course of the Ebbw Valley Railway and connects communities along the way to Ebbw Vale Parkway Station. The route branches off from Route 46 and heads through the valleys past Ebbw Vale and into Cwm. Currently, there is a break in the route between Cwm and Crumlin, but from Crumlin the path continues through to Pontypool.
The opening part of the route links Ebbw Vale’s Festival Park with Cwm Recreation Ground. This section provides direct access for Cwm residents to Ebbw Vale Parkway Station and continues to follow the general line of the railway. Plans are underway between Sustrans and Blaenau Gwent to extend the route southward to connect with Route 465 at Aberbeeg.
From Crumlin, Route 466 continues to Pontypool by way of Swffryd and Hafodyrynys. Beyond Hafodyrynys, the route becomes traffic-free before rejoining Crumlin Road, allowing users to bypass the busier A472. It then continues into Pontypool where another traffic-free section begins.
You can continue your local riding by picking up the adjacent National Cycle Route 465 which runs from Llanhilleth to Brynmawr via Abertillery.
