Further Information and Other Local Ideas

The flora along the walk is typical of coastal environments, with sea thrift, heather, and marram grass prevalent near the sandy dunes and rocky shores. Inland sections of the trail feature patches of gorse, wildflowers, and native grasses, particularly in summer. The area also supports habitats for rare species such as orchids, which thrive in the nutrient-poor soils.
The fauna includes seabirds such as gannets, terns, and cormorants often seen along the shoreline. In spring and summer, look out for puffins on nearby cliffs. Marine mammals such as seals can occasionally be spotted in the waters of Blacksod Bay. Inland, the countryside attracts meadow pipits and skylarks, while peregrine falcons and kestrels are sometimes seen patrolling the skies.
In addition to the natural beauty, the walk offers cultural and historical interest. Cross Abbey, located at the starting point, is a 12th-century monastic ruin steeped in history. Along the trail, you may also encounter remnants of traditional stone walls and other features of the rural Irish landscape. The quiet and remote nature of the area enhances its appeal, making it a peaceful retreat for walkers.
