Downpatrick Head Walk
This circular loop walk visits Downpatrick Head on the north Mayo coast.
You can start the walk from the car park at the headland. The highlight of the walk is reaching Downpatrick Head itself, a striking promontory that juts into the Atlantic Ocean. The headland is famous for the 50-metre-high sea stack known as Dún Briste, which stands isolated from the cliffs after being separated by stormy seas in the 14th century. The layers of colourful sedimentary rock in the stack are a fascinating geological feature, telling a story of millions of years of natural history. Interpretive signs at the site provide additional details about the formation of the stack.
From the cliffs, visitors are treated to expansive views of the Atlantic, with the Stags of Broadhaven rock formations visible on clear days. The wild, windswept beauty of the area is complemented by the sound of crashing waves and the cries of seabirds.
Head west along the coast and you could also visit the noteworthy Ceide Fields. The fascinating archaeological site includes the oldest known stone-walled fields in the world, dating back nearly 6,000 years.
