Cong Forest Nature Loop Walk
This circular loop walk explores Cong Woods in the village of Cong in County Mayo.
You can pick up the 4km waymarked walk to the west of the village. The easy-grade trail begins at the Tourist Office and is well-marked with blue arrows, guiding walkers through the historic Cong Abbey grounds and across the Cong River into the expansive Cong Woods. The path meanders through diverse woodlands, featuring both native and exotic tree species, some of which are over 140 years old. Notable features along the trail include the "Teach Aille" sink, historically used by monks as a natural refrigerator, and the Pigeon Hole cave, which carries an underground river between Lough Mask and Lough Corrib.
The rich biodiversity of Cong Woods is another highlight, with diverse flora and fauna that thrive in this protected environment. The Mini Burren area within the woods is rich in flora and fauna, including orchids, junipers, butterflies, and birds. The combination of historical landmarks and natural beauty makes the Cong Woods Nature Trail a rewarding experience for walkers of all ages.
You can continue your walking in the area by heading south to visit the historic Ashford Castle. The medieval/Victorian castle includes beautiful grounds, riverside trails and a popular hawk walk.
